âSo whatâs even going on in your head right now?â Jo asked.
Sophie halted her stroll along the Champs-Ãlysées and pulled a face at her phone. How was she supposed to answer that? Sophie was all over the place, that was all she knew.
âI donât know,â she admitted. âIâm so confused.â
âOk.â Jo said. âEasy stuff first. Where are you? Somewhere noisy.â
âThe Champs-Ãlysées.â
âOh wow. I love that place. I bet it looks amazing all lit up at night.â
âYeahâ¦â
Sophie took a look around. The Champs-Ãlysées. One of the most famous avenues in Paris, known for its theatres, restaurants, luxury shops and cafes, it ran from the Place de la Concorde and the Place Charles de Gaulle. Her mum had told her years ago that the name was French for the Elysian Fields, the paradise for dead heroes in Greek mythology, and tonight the colourful sparkly lights from the shops and restaurants lined the avenue, making it look magical.
âIt looks gorgeous,â Sophie said.
âTell me about the shops,â Jo said, sounding envious.
âAll the usual high-street ones,â Sophie said, starting to walk again. âPlus many high end.â She named a few. âHang on. Iâll Facetime you.â She swapped to Facetime and moved her phone around to show Jo the sights.
âWow!â Joâs face lit up on the screen. Sheâd gone platinum blond and it suited her. âI love it! God, I have to get some time off work and come visit you. I mean, I know itâs a really hard time for you, but it just looksâ¦â
Sophie turned the phone back and smiled at Jo. âThatâs ok. Iâd love you to come over here. Come and hold my hand; someone needs to.â
âWell, Iâm your girl.â
âI also want to go to Ladurée tonight,â Sophie told her. âJust for some ideas. Iâm redesigning the boxes for mumâs shop.â
âHow exciting!â Joâs expression became sober. âAnd news about your mum? Anything else after the phone call the other day?â
Sophie shook her head. âNo. Iâm just so worried about her, but if I call her, she doesnât answer. The odd text by way of response, but thatâs it.â
âItâs bizarre,â Jo agreed. âAnd so hard for you.â
Sophie bit her lip; it was hard. She had no idea what was going on and all she could do was think the worst. The phone call had elated and reassured her, but the comedown from it had sent her spiralling and now all she could do was question and worry and feel confused about her mumâs absence.
âAnything from Ryan?â Jo wanted to know.
Sophie rolled her eyes. âA few texts. Iâm kind of ignoring him. I have enough going on.â
âTalk to me,â Jo demanded. âI want to know everything.â
Sophie took a deep breath and as she carried on strolling down the Champs-Ãlysées, she filled her best friend in from start to finish. Joâs face changed from a grin to shock, to quizzical.
âWow,â she said finally.
âYeah,â Sophie said, by way of agreement.
âOk.â Jo got straight to the point. âHere are my thoughts.â
Sophie stopped outside Ladurée, admiring
